Summary

The Treasure Within is a conversation between Ms. Bela Raja, the editor of the newsletter Sparsh, and Mr. Hafeez Contractor, one of India’s most renowned architects. The story revolves around Mr. Contractor’s early school years and how his interests and talents were different from traditional academic subjects.

As a child, Hafeez Contractor was not fond of going to school. He disliked bookish knowledge and had a particular fear of Mathematics, even having nightmares about it. He was more interested in sports and playing pranks on others, becoming a senior champion and cricket captain in school. Despite his lack of interest in academics, he managed to clear most exams by copying and cheating. However, his school Principal, recognizing his potential, advised him to take his studies seriously, as he was capable of more than just playing. This advice led to a change in Hafeez’s approach to education, and he started focusing more on his studies.

Despite his rough school life, where he often faced punishment for his mischievous behavior, Hafeez eventually found a path that suited him. Initially, he wanted to join the army, but his family encouraged him to complete his graduation. Though he struggled with French, he switched to learning German and later worked on his language skills with the help of an architect’s wife. This led him to an interest in architecture.

While visiting his cousin’s husband’s office, Hafeez noticed an error in a window design. Impressed by his attention to detail and his ability to draw, his cousin’s husband suggested he pursue architecture. Hafeez’s journey into architecture began with his entrance exam, where he scored an A+ grade and continued to excel throughout his course.

In his professional career, Hafeez learned that his real education came from personal experiences rather than academic knowledge. As an architect, he understood his clients’ needs by observing them closely and drawing designs on the spot to meet their requirements. He came to realize that the sketches he once considered like mathematics problems had become a passion for him.

Conclusion of The Treasure Within

The story teaches an important lesson: each child has unique talents and interests. It is crucial to recognize and nurture these abilities, allowing children to pursue what excites them rather than forcing them into conventional academic molds. Encouraging them to follow their passions can lead to success and fulfillment in their lives.
