Summary
The chapter A Triumph of Surgery tells the story of a small dog, Tricki, who is spoiled by his wealthy owner, Mrs. Pumphrey. She feeds Tricki many rich and unhealthy treats out of love, causing him to gain a lot of weight and become lazy. Tricki hardly exercises and grows very fat, which worries Mrs. Pumphrey. Concerned about his health, she calls Mr. James Herriot, a vet, to help her pet.

When Mr. Herriot sees Tricki, he realizes that Mrs. Pumphrey’s excessive care has made the dog unhealthy. He decides to take Tricki to his hospital to improve his health. For the first two days, Tricki is too tired to move or eat. On the third day, however, he starts playing with other dogs and begins to eat his food, even licking other dogs’ bowls for leftovers. Mr. Herriot ensures Tricki gets a balanced diet and regular exercise. Soon, Tricki becomes active, fighting for food and joining the other dogs in play.

Mrs. Pumphrey, thinking her pet needs extra care, sends eggs and wine for Tricki’s health, but Mr. Herriot and his partners consume these items themselves. As Tricki’s health improves, Mr. Herriot decides it’s time for him to go home. Mrs. Pumphrey is extremely grateful when she sees her lively, happy dog again and thanks Mr. Herriot for the “triumph” of saving her pet.

The story highlights how overindulgence can harm a loved one’s health, as in the case of children who receive too much without limits.
